Art of leadership

Delineation of leadership

Leadership is a art. It is art of behaving people, art of manipulating people, art of changing attitudes and personality traits of Subordinates, art of push the mental and physical limits of subordinates, art of motivation and inspiring people. Art of making vision and ability to translate it in to reality.

“Leadership is largely art rather than a science. Because art is cognizing and synthesizing of inner fillings and imagination, thence expressing or application it creatively to outside, and skilful manner.  Whereas science is a system of acquiring Knowledge experimentally by trial and error process.”

Hence, Based up on afore mention definitions  about art and science, Leadership can be defined as an art rather than a science, since leadership is largely related to dealing with Feelings, Psychological traits, Attitudes and controlling it. The  art of leadership is formed and shaped by combination of afore mention temperament and more importantly Emotional Intelligence.

This easy focus on the psychological trait, moral values and attitudes  related to leadership and how it contribute to build a effective leadership with in a team.

Acumen & fairness

Leaders should have a ability to make right judgement when taking business decisions and resolving work place conflict and contention  between different disciplines of organisation. Human  always seek fairness and justice, perhaps it may be a prime factor for employees loyalty for the organization’s. Work place discrimination is often taken place owing to leadership misjudgement and prejudice of such leadership.

On the other hand, some leaders shows partiality on one party or individual when taking business decisions because of prejudice and being unable stay independent. Consequently some individuals  may develop a negative sentiment about that relevant leader.  Hence, leader must be able to secure the impartiality when resolving conflict and thereby prompt fair Working environment, since  Employees highly anticipate impartiality from their leaders, thereupon they build a respective attitude  about their leader.

Being a member of team (engage)

This is associated with leadership style, some leaders, mostly, who have extrovert and social personality, lead the team while being a member of team in the same time, this style is more collaborative and leader can have a better cognizant and thereby having  a leverage over the team

Compassion

The leaders should cultivate compassion when he leading a team, because all people are not perfect they have weaknesses and limits but leader must be able to see their positives aspects while having a compassion over their weaknesses. Some one can argue compassion can be counterproductive, However in long run, compassion features of leader can instil positive prospect in employees, then it brings constructive results to organisation. Social and emotional intelligence

Leader must have a high level of social and emotional intelligence in order to cognize subordinates feelings personal traits and other mental aspects. Because, in order to prepare and charted a team to undertake a task, leader may needs to change his Subordinate mindset and attitudes at some extent. this is important thing for change, So  to do that, leader should be able to make a influence over its Subordinate, to do that leader have a social and emotional intelligence.

Tenacity and Courage

The leader must be able to firmly hold his Grip over the activities which is carried out according to the decision taken by the leader. There are some leaders who take premature decision and thereafter they change their decision after they realise things are not going well. But there are some leaders who take decision with a understanding of outcome and identify the direction, thence they continue their endeavour firmly with great courage and determination  what ever hurdles they  have to over come.

Communication

Leadership should have a ability to effectively communicate ideas and priorities to others and inspire them to dedicate to meet common goal of organization. There are some leaders, they have a vision and also ideas and road map to reach it, how ever, they have a inability to communicate his complex ideas to others (subordinate). So, with out understanding leader vision and  ideas, subordinate can not align with leader’s  road map.

Integrity

The leader should show his integrity to his subordinates, Should responsible and reflect accountability and transparency from his actions because subordinate anticipate it from their leaders. If leader shows his moral values, the subordinate tent to adhere and follow that leader, it is a natural habit of human. If  leader is  dishonest, ,  subordinate follow the leader & they tend to dishonest, it is difficult for any leader to   behave dishonest team members.

Self -Awareness

Self -Awareness is focusing his own inward in order to  understand who I am, and thereby building a confidence about himself. Leader should have build a higher level of confidence about him self, Otherwise how he can build a confidence about subordinates and trust them. If you have more understand yourself, you can have more control your feelings and other psychological trait. Once you gain control of your self, you can influence others  in order to prepare them for difficult task.

Creativity

Creativity is necessary for leadership as same as other Human abilities such as mathematics, music etc. leadership  is also fed  by  creativity. If leader is creative, He or She can develop more innovative approach to problem solving and behaving subordinate effectively and strategically, And also it helps to make relationship with the members of organization or company

Adaptation to environment

The leader should have a ability to change his or her leadership style according to environment or situation, and severity of the challenge or tasks they have to undertake. For example military style leadership may not be apt for tourist industry’s business organisation, Unlike military forces, tourist industry is a civilian industry and  there are legal constraints for workers, for example” women cannot be deployed in night time work without their consent. For such a industry, leader can’t opt a authentic leadership style. As an alternative, leader should be flexible at some extent, instead of forcing them, leader should negotiate with women workers regarding night time working and finally reach to win- win solution.

 Active listening

True leaders are not arrogant to listening to Subordinates for their ideas and expressions both positive and negative with out interrupting or judging. Thereby leader should be able to understand and empathize employees feelings, on the other hand it convinces to employees that you are Available at any time and thereby building a confidence within them about leader. Which is significance for team building. Further good listener can glean pragmatic ideas from employees, because leader have to understand that the employees may have knowledge about their subject matter than leader, hence active listening can simplify the communication between employees and leader thereby increasing cohesiveness of the team.

Conclusion

Leadership is rather germane to art  than a science, and even if it have naturally befallen to someone, there are Physiological and Moral aspects, that have to be inculcated with in leader to ensure his leadership with in the organization, and  employee retention.
